This is Ford's standard/utility color used through the '50s and into the '70s/beyond on everything from 1950s full-size front bumper splash pans to '60s trim inserts. I'm not sure if this is the same color used for 1958 Lincoln air cleaners and valve covers, so I wanted to throw this out for confirmation/refudiation.Īrgent Silver/Aluminum: Engine Accessories I did find the following:ĭitzler Enamel/Lacquer #: DQE-80653 / DAL-80653 I did find the following:įor '80s engines, Ford Gray was prevalent: again, as of 2/22/13 I do not have color numbers from Ford or the primary suppliers (Ditzler, duPont, Martin Senour, Rinshed-Mason, etc.). Seymour #: EN-46 (Ford Blue) (added to list 2/22/13 AHT) Įveryone seems to struggle to find the "right" shade of blue for this era - at least here's a listing for a few.įor '70s engines, a darker blue was used: as of 2/22/13 I do not have color numbers from Ford or the primary suppliers (Ditzler, duPont, Martin Senour, Rinshed-Mason, etc.). Plasticote #: 205 (Ford Engine Blue (?-need to make sure this is not the lighter Ford Blue used on early '60s engines, i.e. The Ford M-#'s that coincide with DQE-9003 and DQE-9123 need to be determined and might be listed in places like engineering drawings or factory assembly manuals.įord Corporate Blue: Engine, Valve Covers, Air Cleanerįord #: EP-2075 (Reconditioning Engine Blue), EN-2075 It appears to me that Ditzler's number for the paint used on brackets and other underhood items may be DQE-9123, and that the black used on engines and valve covers for the 1958-1960 T-bird and 1959-1963 Lincoln 430 may be DQE-9003/M4J-995. The important number here, -1724, was Ford's number for black from the '50s through the '70s). It appears to me that DQE-9000 is a gloss black exterior color and not an engine enamel, suggesting it was used for the air cleaner and valve covers. Ditzler/PPG noted that Ditzler Enamel# DQE-9123/DE-9123 was a flat black used for Lincoln Continental engines 1963-prior, and as a standard/utility color during the 1950s-1970s period.īlack (Engine): Valve Covers, Air Cleanerĭitzler listed this number as being used on 1964-1965 Lincoln Continental engines. DQE-9000/9003 appear to be engine gloss/semi-gloss black in comparison to DQE-9123 (see next paragraph).įlat Black (Engine): Valve Covers, Air Cleaner DQE-9000 is listed as being used on 1964-1965 Lincoln Continental engines. Ditzler/PPG listed DQE-9003 a Ford standard/utility color used 1963 and prior. I suspect this was a standard/utility color also used on various parts of Ford/Mercury/Lincoln engines during the early-mid '50s, but I want to validate this theory.įord #: M1J-995, M1J-1611, M1J-1616, EP-1724 (Reconditioning Engine Black)įord listed M-2824 prior to 1985-1959 M1J-995 appears to have been brought out in 1958, and M4J-1611 and M1J-1616 in 1963 as a black for engines, but it's not confirmed if the numbers designated different formulation or gloss levels. More research is needed to determine if other manufacturers (duPont, R-M, Sherwin-Williams, etc.) have similar codes for engine colors that carry cross references to Ford M-#'s.Įngine Black: Engine Block, Heads, Intake, Front Cover, Water Pump, Oil Pan For the Ditzler/PPG codes, DQE- is an enamel formula, DAL- is lacquer, and DDE- is what I believe a code for engine enamel. I have no idea what their curent versions are. Paint numbers from Ditzler/PPG are taken from a listing printed in 1971. The primary purpose of this exercise is to find out if the Ditzler listings for Lincolns are correct or bogus. Begging your pardon, I am including some of the Ford/T-bird listings with additional Lincoln-related notes as part of this thread for comparison information. I've been working on compiling paint code numbers from various manufacturers and narrowing down engine-related paint colors as part of my on-going research for VTCI's Original Factory Specifications books, and ran into something related to 1959-1965 Lincolns.
